LASIK Vision Correction Surgery
LASIK eye surgery has been approved by the FDA for a number of years, and literally millions of patients around the world have benefited from this new medical technology. LASIK is a medial term that stands for laser in-situ keratomileusis. Medical doctors who have also been through an ophthalmology residency program perform LASIK. An excimer laser is used to perform laser eye surgery. Excimer lasers were developed originally by IBM in an effort to improve the manufacturing of microcircuitry. The unique feature of the excimer laser is that it can remove tissue without imparting heat or damage to surrounding tissue. In other words, it can make very precise cuts in tissue without scarring the surrounding areas. This capability makes the excimer laser ideal for changing the shape of the cornea by precisely removing millions of little pieces of corneal tissue. LASIK is used primarily to correct myopia, but it is also now used to correct hyperopia, astigmatism and presbyopia (age-related farsightedness). When LASIK is performed, a corneal flap is created. The flap is folded back, and then the laser ablates the corneal tissue. There is no pain during LASIK, because even though the outer surface of the cornea is very sensitive, the inner tissue, where the laser removes tissue, has no nerve endings. The flap is created using one of two techniques; a microkeratome, which is a blade, or a femtosecond laser (also known as IntraLase.)
Refractive Surgery Procedures –Surface Ablation
Laser eye surgery can also be performed on the surface of the cornea without creating a flap. This is known as surface ablation. The most common types of surface ablation are called PRK and LASEK.
